Stigmergy is a method of communication in emergent systems in which the individual parts of the system communicate with one another by modifying their local environment.
Having recently read Emergence by Steve Johnson, I was surprised to not have run across this word before, although I have a feeling I passed over it without notice. From the comments of Rushkoff’s recent post on suicide bombings as viral media I read about the IED marketplace in Iraq which self-linked to a previous post on stimergy.
