New York City of today isn’t exactly as we had imagined it. Through history there have been many possible futures that have gone unrealized. The Museum of the Phantom City presents these Architectural and Urban Design proposals as one moves through the city to the intended locations via an iPhone app that is available no in the app store. The Van Alen Institute is holding a walking tour on Sturday October 3rd, the day the full site launches.

30 Day Flight

Dear jetBlue | The 30-day flight.jpg

Recently Jet Blue offered an All-You-Can-Jet pass for a month of unlimited flights. Its a fantastic idea, so great that it sold out early. Dustin Curtis and Alaska Miller took Jet Blue up on the offer and are visiting all 43 cities served by Jet Blue in the US, thats 90 flight segments. Why put oneself through this experience, which to be honest, will be painful at best?

In an airplane, hundreds of people with rich backgrounds and histories are crammed together for hours at a time. They have fascinating stories. We want to tell some of them. Our plan is to strike up conversations during our flights and see if maybe, after 30 days of constant flying, we can get a good understanding of the average jetBlue flier. We’re going to document our experiences at 30dayflight.com. We’d love for you to follow our adventure.

Follow dcurtis progress on the twitter for updates like

Wonder what the TSA guy was thinking when I couldn’t remember where I was going after 16 boarding passes fell out of my passport.

Good luck to these intrepid travelers and hope to watch things unfold on 30dayflight.com

I had the need to use one of these today. Unfortunately any of the online versions don’t have the satisfaction inherent in using one of these analog computers.

Help Remedies_ simple healthcare products for headaches, bodyaches, allergies, sleep issues, cuts and blisters.jpg

Help Remedies has released their new products, which they briefly previewed to the PSFK NY conference this spring. Help continues on it’s goal to simplify everyday health needs, with clear, well designed, no nonsense packaging. It is refreshing to see medicine described thusly:

Each package of “help I have a headache” contains 16 oblong pills. Each oblong pill contains 500mgs acetaminophen. We use acetaminophen because it’s an excellent treatment for headaches and it’s delicate on stomachs. We use as large a dose of acetaminophen as we can, and the fewest possible fillers, coatings, and dyes.

We haven’t used “extra strength” to describe our headache pills even though they do have lots of acetaminophen. That’s because if everybody always used “extra strength” to describe headache pills then “extra strength,” wouldn’t really mean anything anymore. And we don’t want the things that we say to mean nothing.

discovery in the city via mariolife and street art

Walking home the other day I decided to play Mariolife, a real life GPS game on my iPhone. Playing in this case, is walking around in the real world gathering up virtual coins and mushrooms and rescuing princesses. In my quest to gather up coins I found myself walking on streets I had never walked, at least with any kind of noticing, and running into bits of street art I had not yet seen as well. My real life adventure was being guided by the placement of coins that existed only on the screen of my iPhone. So in spending a couple of hours wandering around collecting virtual coins and real street art (in photos) I realized that there was something really special about the collision of very different real world expereinces that was happening here.

Nice comparison showing the increasing size of a ‘compact car’ found over at Kitsune Noir as part of the desktop wallpaper project.

West End Avenue and 101st street from Scouting New York. All four are on West End Avenue actually – at 101st, 100th, 90th and 66th.

Update: Infrastructurist points out several more in NYC, including one at 42nd and 5th as well as a lone phone booth on a Govenors Island pier.

Print tests « thehumanprinter-1.jpg

thehumanprinter creates CMYK prints of your photos by hand.

Unlike any other printer thehumanprinter creates unique, individual images each time it prints. Following the same process as a digital printer, thehumanprinter generates the printed product by hand. Throughout the printing process thehumanprinter assumes the role of the machine and is therefore controlled and restricted by the process of using CMYK halftones created on the computer.

Ocean swimming pool in Saint-Malo France. I love how at high tide the pool slips back to ocean, leaving only the diving platform poking above the water, like some concrete sea monster. There is great flickr group with many more beautiful pictures of the pool.
